CD 6: Honey Cone "Soulful Sugar"

I was introduced to the 70's girl group Honey Cone a few years ago, and they've became one of my all-time favorites. The best way to describe their sound is a combination of The Supremes and The Jackson 5, which isn't a surprise, because Honey Cone were on Holland-Dozier-Holland's Hot Wax label. A majority of their output features lead singer Edna Wright, sister of Darlene Love.

This ultimate 2-disc set Soulful Sugar features all four of their albums: Take Me With You (1970), Sweet Replies (1971), Soulful Tapestry (1972), and Love, Peace and Soul (1973). Towards the end of the set, you're treated to the rare disco single and flipside of the revived Honey Cone in 1976, featuring Sharon Cash. Four alternate and single versions of some of their biggest hits closes out the set.

What can I say - you can't go wrong with Soulful Sugar. Although not as well-known as The Supremes and other girl groups from that era, some of their hits are recognizable, especially "Want Ads", "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show", and "Stick Up". Don't miss out on Honey Cone calling out the hypocrites in "Sunday Morning People"!

The Honey Cone were awesome. I'm 44 and the early 70s were their time. Their biggest hits came from an album called "Soulful Tapestry", which contained One Monkey Don't Stop No Show, The Day I found Myself, Stick Up and their masterpiece Want Ads. Want Ads in particular sounded so fucking good on the radio, especially in context with everything else in the top 40 at the time. Everything about Want Ads is perfect, the guitar, the drums, the bass, the vocal arrangements, the lyrics: wanted/young man single and free/experience in love preferred/but we'll accept a young trainee. I got that Soulful Sugar compilation myself on Amazon a few years ago and it's one of my most treasured CDs in my collection. Scott

Hi Joey!

Cool, good to meet another fan of The Honey Cone! I was introduced to them actually a few years ago (before my time LOL), and have been hooked ever since.

I love the songs you listed, as well as "When Will It End", "Sunday Morning People", "Sitting On A Time Bomb", "Ace In The Hole", and both sides of the 45 featuring Sharon Cash and the "New Honey Cone".

The Soulful Sugar set is just great from start to finish, I loved it as well as some other sets from H-D-H/Hot Wax/Invictus labels (especially Laura Lee and The Glass House).

Stop by anytime, Scott - I'll try to work on more retro soul music soon!
