CD 12: Boy George - High Hat

If you lived in America during the late 80's/early 90's, you didn't hear much of George's solo albums - mostly because he wasn't promoted very well as a solo act. In fact, not until 1991's "The Crying Game", George hadn't charted anywhere near Culture Club's output.

This second solo album by Boy George - High Hat from 1989 - is largely disliked by the fanbase. Why, I don't know. The LP was issued in other countries as Boyfriend and Tense Nervous Headache, which included varying track listings (some of which were not on the U.S.-only High Hat). Either way, it was a mixed bag of songs.

I really like the album version of "Don't Take My Mind On A Trip" (which is much better than the remixes out there) - it sounds almost like an early version of what they called "New Jack Swing" in the early 90's. "You Are My Heroin" is one of the best recordings from his career, and "You Found Another Guy" is a pretty decent dance track. The reggae "Kipsy" seems to have quite a following in the fanbase.

There's a couple throwaway tracks here, and unfortunately some of the songs (like "Don't Cry") starts to show George's vocal limitations, after his romp with abusing chemicals. It's still a great solo album, although it's taken time to grow on me.
